The information below is designed to supplement the UCAS reference and present Higher Education Providers with a student’s school context as part of the admissions process.
Newquay Tretherras School is a Co-educational all ability comprehensive academy of 1700 students, aged 11-18, including over 250 in a co-educational Sixth Form.
The school draws students from the 2nd highest ward of deprivation in Cornwall and is currently in the 10% most deprived areas of the country. Despite this, our students achieve consistently outstanding exam results. At A Level the pass rate over the last four years is above 99% with over 50 per cent obtaining A*- B in the last three years (2017 – 54%). This year 21% applied and successfully gained places at Russell Group Universities, with up to 70% of our Year 13’s taking up places in Higher Education each year.
Our Sixth Form curriculum is based around a strong academic core. The standard offering is 3 A Level subjects with EPQ offered in year 13. 33% of students study a vocational Level 3 subjects. A small cohort of around 20% of our most exceptional students, based on performance at GCSE, are permitted to study 4 A Level subjects. It is the school’s policy to allow departments to choose who to enter for AS exams, this may change as the linear exams become more embedded into the school.
The EPQ allows our students to pursue an investigation in real depth, becoming expert in their chosen subject and demonstrating their research and presentation skills in ways that are ever more in demand by employers and Universities.
Determining Predicted Grades
AS exam results continue to play the key role in determining students’ predicted grades in A Level subjects. Students’ performance across the two years is judged through class assessments and formal testing three times a year. This allows us to identify how the students’ are progressing throughout the course and, combined with the AS grades form the basis of our predictions.
